And if you need a place to stay...
This is from the Highway 22 bridge. See how low the water is, it's just a trickle coming into the lake.
Same angle as the winter photo. A tale of two seasons.
From near the summit of Highway 20.
See Mt jefferson on a clear day. This is just ahead of the last campground before entering Detroit proper.
This is what you get when you use the Highway 20 turnout for Mt. Washington. A perfect view of the mountain.
On a crystal clear day. We took this from Highway 20 just outside of Sisters.
Are we there yet? Yes!
Peace and tranquility are yours.
The social event of the day, going shopping at the Country Store!
The infamous circles.
Can't beat the Sunriver pool!
The line for Goody's forms to the right!
Deschutes river rafting/canoeing/kayaking can't be beat! Mt. Bachelor looms in the background.
No jumping, despite the carvings in the railings that say JUMP HERE. We hear it's a $30 ticket if you are caught.
The Deschutes originates west of Sunriver among the Cascade lakes. Coming out of Devil's Lake, it's more like a stream that passes under the highway. Stop to take a look. Hard to believe it becomes the mighty rafting river you see just a few miles down the road.
From the Deschutes River bike trail, you see Big Eddie rapids. These are the rapids the rafters shoot through.
You can raft, or bike along the river! A trail takes you from Sunriver to Bend. It's about 18 miles long, moderate up and down (mostly DOWN from Sunriver), but not for the faint of heart. The views are unmatched.
One of our favorite adventures. Here's a lucky crew going through Big Eddie on the Deschutes headed for Bend.
On the bike trail. They don't call our neighborhood Deer Park for nothing.
On the road.
This big buck was camped outside our home.
At the end of the day, the Sunriver stable horses are dead tired!
This shot, taken early Spring, shows Bachelor in the distance.
A shot across the valley looking towards Paulina Peak.
You can hike up (free) using the ski runs. Not so bad. Allow 45 minutes to an hour of steady climbing.
Hike up (or ride the chair) and this is your reward! You can hike to the top of the mountain, but start from the Sunrise Lodge parking lot. It's about 2.5 hours up, 1.5 down.
From the highest spot in the region, a 360-degree view including a look down to Paulia Lake.
About 30 minutes west of Sunriver is Cultus Lake. Marina, lodge, coffee shop, boat rentals, quite the place.
From near Camp Sherman, headwaters of the Metolius River
One of the most amazing sights is the water gushing out of pure rock at the headwaters of the Metolius. This picture was taken at 7am in September of 2006 with the mist of the Metolius rising against the backdrop of Mt. Jefferson. Not too many people were there that morning to see this. They should have been.
From the McKenzie Pass highway. The trip is hours long, but there are views around every curve.
The highway has many vistas and hiking trails through the regions volcanic past. In the background is the tip of Mt. Washington on the left, Mt. Jefferson on the right.
The Lava Caves are one of Sunriver's best kept secrets. They're so close. On a hot day, the constant 60 degrees inside the cave is heaven. You can hike to the cave's terminus, maybe a mile inside.
They pass under Highway 97 and there is a marker where it happens. The road is just above you (100 feet or so) and your trek takes you down further after that.
On Devil's Lake, off the Cascade Highway
Sparks Lake is one of Oregon's most scenic spots. You could fill up a digital camera in a short period of time, there are so many photo opportunities. Here is Mt. Bachelor from the edge of the summer marsh near the Cascade Lakes Highway.
Headed up for a day of skiing. If the weather is clear, this is your first indication it's going to be a great day.
...this is your prize for a winter visit!
